I've been in the podcast universe for quite some time now. To be precise, since 2006 (passively) and since 2018 (actively).
Since the beginning of the pandemic, there has been a wave of podcasts (again). Everyone is starting one, everyone wants to become famous and rich with it.
This means that hosts and platforms are springing up everywhere.
Spotify, Deezer, etc. have of course been involved for a long time.
Now I think that podcasts should be freely accessible and basically free of charge. The possibility of supporting your favorite podcast, financially or however, of course has its right to exist. Everything is possible - nothing is necessary.
If you can live off of support, that's great too. I don't want to deny that to anyone, because what is better than being able to make a living from what you like to do?
Now many platforms are increasingly isolating themselves and cutting back on transparency.
No Spotify subscription - no possibility to listen to podcasts that are only available there.
I think the statement "No Feed - No Podcast" is essential and correct.
Until recently, "Apple Podcasts" was also a directory that had to be used if you wanted to get your podcast out to people.
Now Apple has announced that it will also offer paid podcasts. It is not a "must", but I think it is a step in the wrong direction.
As a result, the entire backend has imploded and is now completely broken.
But enough of the rant!
It's time again to highlight a wonderful project.
FYYD
FYYD is a Podcast Podcastnetwork thats worth to have a look at. I asked EAZY (the fyyd mastermind)
FYYD some questions:
--------------
NB = NERDBUDE
EAZY = Eazy ;)
--------------
NB: What means "
FYYD"?
EAZY: Nothing, basically. I always have a few domains on hand so that I have something to hand in case of a spontaneous attack of projectitis.
http://fyyd.de was already the domain for a few other projects before the directory, which of course have since been discontinued.
I could also do this on subdomains, but I'm a lazy person and like short domains.
But there aren't many four-digit domains that can cause as little trouble as possible with other companies/projects, which is why I guard them like a treasure :)
NB: Since when do you host "
FYYD"?
EAZY: I can't pinpoint the exact date, but it started roughly in spring 2015, with development running parallel to flattrboard.
FYYD first saw the light of day in early 2016.
NB: How many podcasts and how many episodes do you have in the database?
EAZY: Podcast: 37,971 and episodes: 6,310,197
This is a very low number compared to most other directories. There are several reasons for this:
1. I do NOT use Apple and get information about new podcasts from there, as practically all other directories do.
I only have hand-entered information. Whether it comes from users or the podcast itself is irrelevant.
2. I try to make sure that I don't have any dead files.
I fail at this regularly, but that also contributes to it.
NB: And last but not least, a brief overview of the technology used behind
FYYD (DB, backend, frontend).
EAZY: Nice question :)
Generally: This is a php project. Almost everything except for the backend stuff is php.
Database: mysql for quick access to simple stuff, elasticsearch for the search index.
Backend: This is a nasty mixture of scripts in very different languages, some php, some bash, some tcl(!). I usually use the language that a) I feel like using at the time and b) that gets me to my goal the fastest.
Frontend: The framework I use is called "fatfree framework". I love it. PHP of course, lightweight and comes with everything I need. The community is small but very nice and I can reach the developers within a few minutes if necessary.
CSS+Co is done for me by uikit v2, although it is now outdated.
I just can't seem to get it up to v3. Migration is not exactly my specialty :)
------------
As you can see,
FYYD is a project that definitely deserves to be supported.
A podcast directory with the right mentality.
Here you can find new podcasts, create and subscribe to curated lists or take a look at the
FYYDiverse, but that's a whole different story.
The
AUDIOCORTEX feed also runs on
FYYD ;)
Thanks of course go to
EAZY for patiently answering my questions.
